Soft Tissue Surgery

The Soft Tissue Service at SCVS is provided by Tony Ryan and Ian Nicholson, both European Specialists in Small Animal Surgery.

Tony & Ian accept a wide variety of general surgery cases referred by general practitioners, in addition to working closely with the other services within the practice. Our state of the art diagnostic equipment, including digital radiography, endoscopy, fluoroscopy, in-house CT scanner and weekly access to a 1.5 Tesla MRI are available to ensure comprehensive investigation of all conditions.

The Soft Tissue Surgery Service is supported by a team of highly motivated interns and nurses providing 24-hour care for the hospitalised patients. Tony is also available for telephone consultations with veterinary surgeons who may want to discuss a referral or need advice for cases that cannot be referred.

Soft tissue surgery is a very varied discipline and includes:

Ear nose and throat surgery

  • total ear canal ablation with lateral bulla osteotomy and ventral bulla osteotomy
  • brachycephalic airway disease and laryngeal paralysis
  • investigation of nasal discharge

Cardiothoracic surgery

Tony works closely with the Cardiorespiratory Service and procedures performed include

  • pericardiectomy and patent ductus arteriosus ligation
  • intercostal thoracotomy / median sternotomy
  • lung lobectomy
  • mediastinal mass resection
  • diaphragmatic rupture / peritoneo-pericardial diaphragmatic hernia repair

Gastrointestinal/ hepatobiliary surgery

  • a range of gastrointestinal surgeries are performed from elective gastropexy to management of peritonitis
  • Portosystemic shunt investigation and attenuation utilizing
    •  mesenteric portography
    •  CT angiography
  • biliary bypass procedures

Wound management and Oncological surgical reconstruction

  • complex skin reconstruction following mass resection
  • mandibulectomy / maxillectomy
  • thoracic / body wall reconstruction

Urogenital surgery

  • investigation and treatment of urinary incontinence using cystoscopy and CT urography
