Nursing

We have a very experienced and skilled team of over 30 fully qualified veterinary nurses, supported by a team of auxiliary nurses. Many of our nurses have further qualifications such as Advanced Veterinary Nursing Diplomas and Certificates. Every member of the nursing team at SCVS works with love, compassion and care ensuring that the care pets at SCVS receive is truly outstanding and like no other.

Jo Webb

Jo gained the Royal Veterinary College Veterinary Nursing degree, graduating with Honours in July 2006. She then joined Cedar Veterinary Group which introduced her to referral practice. In 2007 she became the cardiology nurse, a role she enjoyed immensely and gained a huge amount of experience from. In 2008 she moved to SCVS and began working with the orthopaedic team broadening her surgical nursing skills. She has also graduated with a Graduate Diploma in Professional and Clinical Veterinary Nursing, being awarded overall highest marks gained by the RVC. Jo has worked as head nurse at SCVS, before becoming nursing mananger in 2015, responsible for managing the whole nursing team.

Katie Foley

Katie started her career at Priory Veterinary Hospital and qualified in 2007. She then moved to Cedar Veterinary Group as a general nurse and was offered a position as part of Cedar Referrals. In 2008 she moved to SCVS and gained the Diploma of Higher Education in Advanced Clinical Nursing with distinction in 2011. Katie started at SCVS as deputy head surgical nurse but has since taken on the role of nursing manager alongside Jo. She is responsible for managing the whole nursing team and organises the daily running of the practice. Katie enjoys the management of all surgical cases and is looking to undertake a VTS in surgery.

Clare Whellams

Clare started her nursing career in general small animal practice, and after qualifying, she travelled around Australia working in both small animal and large animal practices. On returning she became a locum and accepted a position at a referral hospital in Bristol. There, she became orthopaedic nurse for several years, gaining experience in MRI, CT and neurology. She later moved to Cedar Referrals, and then to SCVS when we opened in 2008.

She has a particular interest in surgery, especially joint replacement procedures & is our Head Surgical Nurse, taking responsibility for theatre organisation. Clare has passed her nursing certifiate in anaethesia, and is now beginning her nursing certificate in emergency and critcal care.

Kate Buckler

Kate started work as a veterinary nurse at Heathlands Veterinary Hospital in 2003 before qualifying in 2007. Shortly after, she moved to Hertfordshire to work as a general nurse at the Royal Veterinary College's Queen Mother Hospital. Having rotated around different departments for one year Kate specialised in emergency and critical care where she worked for a further three years. During her time at the Royal Veterinary College Kate achieved her A1 assessor training, her diploma in clinical veterinary nursing and her diploma in advanced veterinary nursing (small animal).

In 2012 Kate joined SCVS where she now works solely in wards, organising the day to day running and providing care for hospitalised patients. Having worked as ward supervisor for a year, Kate has recently become Head Ward Nurse.

Claire Dunn

Claire spent the first seven years of her veterinary nursing career at a large mixed first opinion practice in Hampshire where she gained her VN qualification. She joined SCVS in July 2009 as a general nurse gaining valuable skills within each discipline prior to specialising in medical nursing. As Senior Medical Nurse, Claire is responsible for the daily running of the medicine service as well as assisting Katie with infection control. Claire achieved her RVC Graduate Diploma In Professional and Clinical Veterinary Nursing in September 2012.

Karen Church

Karen has been nursing since 2001. She began her training at UWE on the BSc VN course, then going on to finish at a foster practice in Hampshire. In 2005 began working at Cedar Referrals where she gained valuable skills and knowledge in both surgical and medical nursing. Finding a particular interest in neuro-diagnostics/surgery and rehabilitation, she moved to work within the neurology department in 2009. In March 2013 Karen passed her City and Guilds certificate in Emergency and Critical Care.

In 2015 Karen became one of only a handful of UK members of the Academy of internal medicine for veterinary technicians (AIMVT) to achieve this Karen had to complete a formal process of education, training, experience and exams in order to be recognised as a Veterinary Technician Specialist in neurology, something to be very proud of as she was the first in the UK.

Jamielee Garland

Jamielee gained her nursing degree from the Royal Veterinary College, qualifying in 2010 (with distinction). She initially worked in a small mixed animal practice before progressing to Barrow Hill Veterinary Hospital in Kent. Jamielee joined the nursing team at SCVS, in January 2011, after relocating to Dorset. She rotated through the disciplines for several months before specialising in internal medicine. Jamielee later developed an interest in neurology and currently works in both the medicine and neurology departments. She is responsible for assisting Claire and Karen in organisiing the daily running of the medicine and neurology departments, as well as organisation of the hospital dispensary and  maintenance of the inhouse laboratory equipment. Jamielee achieved the Graduate Diploma in Professional and Clinical Veterinary Nursing (with distinction) in 2014. Jamielee enjoys the management and stabilisation of emergency medical and neurological patients, and so completed the City and Guilds certificate in Emergency and Critical Care in 2016.

David White

David started work as a veterinary nurse student at Lynwood veterinary centre in 2005, qualifying in 2007. After spending some time locuming, David worked at the Royal Veterinary College's Queen Mother Hospital for 3 years as a surgical and anaesthesia nurse. In 2010 David moved to Devon to work as head nurse at a mixed practice, before moving back to Dorset and joining the SCVS team as a surgical nurse.

David has a passion for anaesthesia especially regional anaesthesia and pain management, and has completed the ESVPS certificate in anaesthesia and critical care certificate. He has recently started the North American veterinary technician specialist in anaesthesia course.

Ellen-Martin Hayley-Minson Caprice-McWilliams

Hayley Minson

Hayley graduated from the University of the West of England in 2008 with a BSc (Hons) degree in Animal Behaviour and Welfare. Soon after this she realised that her interests extended to veterinary medicine. She joined SCVS in 2009 as an Animal Nursing Assistant and went on to train as a student nurse here. She qualified in January 2013 and worked as a rotation nurse for a number of years, gaining vital experience in all areas of referral nursing. She completed extra qualifications in wound management and later went on to achieve the BSAVA Merit award in medical nursing. She has now been promoted to a senior nurse and splits her working time between the medicine, imaging and wards departments. She has a special interest in providing strategies to minimise stress in hospitalised patients, ensuring the welfare needs of the patients are met during their stay.

Ellen Martin

Ellen started working at SCVS in 2009 as a nursing assistant, before beginning the journey to becoming a registered nurse. After qualifying in 2015 she spent a year gaining experience rotating through all disciplines, before specialising in internal medicine and imaging. In 2016 she completed her ESVPS certificate in emergency and critical care. Ellen enjoys all aspects of nursing, but has a particular interest in the management and stablisation of medical patients.

Caprice McWilliams

Caprice started her career in veterinary nursing in 2008 working for a small animal practice in Poole. She started working at SCVS in 2010 as a second year trainee and in 2012 she achieved her level 3 Diploma in Veterinary Nursing. For five years Caprice rotated through the disciplines where she gained valuable knowledge and experience. In 2015 she completed the ESVPS Certificate in Anaesthesia and is now is studying towards the ESVPS Certificate in Emergency and Critical Care. During her rotation Caprice had a particular interest in wards nursing and in 2016 she moved into wards full-time as a member of the night team. Caprice is passionate about all aspects of wards nursing, she also has a keen interest in nursing the neurological patient and also enjoys emergency and critical care nursing.

Rebecca-Holloway

Rebecca Holloway

Rebecca qualified as a Registered Veterinary Nurse in 2009 having completed her training at Cedar Veterinary Group in Ringwood. After qualifying she continued to work at Cedars as a multidisciplined Veterinary Nurse and developed a wide range of skills, during this time she discovered a particular passion for providing gold standard inpatient care and decided to move into referral nursing to develop these skills further. In 2012 she joined SCVS as a dedicated wards nurse and has been fundamental in the establishment of this role. Rebecca has a keen interest in emergency nursing and achieved her Certificate in Emergency and Critical Care (CertVNECC) in 2015. She particularly enjoys nursing the high dependency patients and building bonds with the long term neurological patients.

Tina Howells

Tina started her Veterinary Nursing career at Aniwell Veterinary Clinic in 1996, gaining her RVN qualification in 1999.  She then went to work for the PDSA, where she progressed to Head Nurse of their small animal hospital. In 2007 Tina joined Cedar Veterinary Group as a Night VN providing out of hours and emergency care, before moving to SCVS in 2010 as a Night VN. In 2012 Tina made the move to working in the daytime as a dedicated wards and later went on to combined this with working across the anaesthesia and surgical departments.  Tina enjoys emergency and critical care nursing, obtaining the Certificate in Emergency and Critical Care in 2015 and is currently working towards the ESVPS Certificate in Anaesthesia.  Having taken a keen interest in the Animal Nursing Assistants (ANA), Tina has undertaken the role of ANA supervisor and is responsible for managing them within the practice and supporting them in achieving their Veterinary Care Assistant qualification.

Vicky Sawyer

Vicky qualified from a mixed animal hospital in 2001 with a keen interest in all aspects of Veterinary nursing.  In 2002 she started work at an equine referral Veterinary Hospital and qualified as an equine nurse in 2005,  she was then promoted to deputy head nurse and her main roles were surgery nurse and running the nuclear scintigraphy unit.  She joined SCVS in 2014 as a night nurse and has a special interest in canine behaviour and rehabilitation.  As a night nurse working solely in wards gives her the opportunity to get to know the patients and their personalities enabling each inpatient to be treated as an individual.
