Orthopaedic

The orthopaedic service at SCVS is the most experienced in the South of England. It is run by Harry Scott and Mark Bush, assisted by Phil Witte, our surgical resident. All of the surgeons keep up to date with the very latest developments in their field by undertaking and providing regular courses in veterinary orthopaedics and spinal surgery.

The department uses state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment, including digital radiography, fluoroscopy, computer-aided tomography (CT Scan) and MRI to identify problems in the joints, muscle or bone. At SCVS we have a multi-disciplinary approach to patient care, and surgical patients benefit from input from cardiology, internal medicine and diagnostic imaging colleagues when required. The surgical facilities are extensive allowing SCVS to treat a wide variety of conditions including;

  • Lameness investigation
  • Cranial cruciate ligament disease (Tibial plateau levelling osteotomy (TPLO), tibial tuberosity advancement (TTA) and tightrope techniques
  • Arthroscopic investigation and treatment of joint disease
  • Hip screening for puppies from 16 weeks of age (PennHIP)
  • Hip dysplasia investigation and management (incl Triple Pelvic Osteotomy and Juvenile Pubic Symphodesis)
  • Cemented and uncemented canine and feline total hip replacement
  • TATE total elbow replacement
  • Sliding humeral osteotomy (SHO)
  • Kyon proximal plated ulna osteotomy (PPUO)
  • Biomedtrix total knee replacement (TKR)
  • Arthrodesis (joint fusion)
  • Management of bone and joint tumours
  • Intervertebral disc disease
  • Linear and Circular external skeletal fixation, locking plates and screws for the management of complex fractures and angular limb deformities
All of the orthopaedic cases receive comprehensive 24-hour on-site care from our dedicated and highly skilled nursing staff. Unlike many other referral centres we have qualified physiotherapists on site who play a vital role in rehabilitating patients following surgery.

Fixed price procedures and surgical guarantees

SCVS was one of the first referral centres in the UK to publish a price list of common procedures on its website. We were also leaders in the field when we offered fixed pricing for certain procedures such as joint replacements (our current fixed price procedures are shown below).

Uniquely we now also offer a surgical guarantee for a number of our orthopaedic procedures. It has always seemed unfair that a client who has paid for a major procedure should be penalised if there are any postoperative complications. We are so confident of our high success rate with our tibial plateau levelling osteotomies (TPLOs), including simultaneous bilateral TPLOs, and our hip and knee joint replacement surgeries, that we will treat any complications free of charge should they arise. All we ask is that our postoperative discharge instructions are followed closely and the patient is returned for re-examinations as requested (short-term follow up re-examinations and x-rays are free of charge!). TPLOs are guaranteed in this way for 12 months and hip and knee joint replacements for life provided the patient is returned for annual re-examinations and x-rays as requested. With fixed prices and a surgical guarantee which covers the cost of complications we offer cutting edge care at an affordable price.
