Advanced Orthopaedics at Southern Counties Veterinary Specialists

Here at SCVS we’re proud to offer cutting-edge solutions for complex orthopaedic conditions, combining expertise with advanced technology to provide the best outcomes for our patients.

Recently, Herbie, a lovely Spaniel, visited us with a right forelimb lameness. Upon examination by our Orthopaedics Specialist, Diogo Miraldo, discomfort was noted in both elbows. A CT scan revealed bilateral humeral intracondylar fissures—a common cause of forelimb lameness in dogs, especially Spaniels. To address this, Diogo recommended transcondylar screw placement in both humeri to reinforce the fissures.

Leveraging our in-house 3D printing capabilities, Diogo designed and printed patient-specific surgical guides, based on Herbie’s CT scan. These guides ensured perfect screw placement, enhancing surgical precision and safety.

The result? Herbie’s lameness resolved immediately after surgery! Following six weeks of rest to allow for healing, Herbie is now back to living his best life—happy, active, and painfree.

At SCVS, we pride ourselves on offering innovative solutions like 3D-printed surgical guides for orthopaedic, neurosurgery, and some soft tissue procedures. This state-of-the-art approach improves patient safety and outcomes while significantly reducing waiting times compared to external services. Every surgical guide is made from biocompatible, surgicalgrade resin, ensuring the highest quality care.
