Cardiology Intern

Job summary

The Cardiology Intern will be working under the direct supervision of three cardiology specialists, two board eligible cardiology clinicians and one cardiology resident within a multidisciplinary environment. The Cardiology Intern’s principle role is to facilitate the smooth running of the Cardiology department. The Cardiology Intern will have the opportunity to develop basic echocardiographic skills or evolve existing echocardiographic skills. The Cardiology Intern will be expected to help with the daily care of all Cardiology patients and clinician communications, participate actively in weekly journal clubs, and work on a research project towards a peer-reviewed publication.

Essential & Desirable Requirements

  • Must be RCVS registered.
  • Have completed of a Rotating Internship or have equivalent experience
  • Excellent communication skills - verbal, hand written and electronic.
  • Excellent organisational skills.
  • Able to work well under pressure in a busy working environment.
  • Be respectful of all working colleagues, irrespective of their status within the organisation
  • Prioritising workload and dealing with emergency situations in a calm, rational and professional manner.
  • Flexibility to work on a rota, which will include working weekends, nights and OOH on-calls.
  • Ensure that all treatment given is in line with informed consent and in accordance with UK legislation and RCVS guide to professional conduct.
  • Follow practice policies and group clinical guidelines.
  • Basic echocardiographic skills desirable but not essential

Admin skills

  • Demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Use a variety of software packages such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Power point, Holter Software and RX Works as necessary.
  • Help manage mailing lists, digital reminder lists and messaging (monday.com).
  • Assist the administration team at SCVS, helping them at all times to give accurate and timely information to referring veterinary practices.  To that end, our intern must be proficient at giving approximate and detailed estimates when requested by the admin team prior to referral. The volume of emails received can be high and it can be difficult for non-clinical staff to differentiate which queries require urgent action and which can wait until the clinician is back. The intern is expected to check these platforms and flag any urgent requests if required.

Competency:  Clinical Duties

Key tasks:

  • Holter ECG fitting and organising Holter ECG submissions
  • Assisting with Echocardiographic examinations and other cardiac investigations
  • Writing reports for performed echocardiographic examination
  • Dispensing medication

Competency:  Journal Club, CPD & Research Training

Key tasks:

  • The Cardiology intern is expected to attend Cardiology journal and book club on a weekly basis.
  • Cardiology-specific CPD is encouraged.
  • The topics to be covered during morning journal/book clubs are arranged by the Cardiology residents and interns who are expected to send an email to relevant clinicians and interns with sufficient notice.
  • Maintain personal CPD as per RCVS guidelines.
  • Participate in research and write up case reports or studies with the intention of these being published in the veterinary literature and/or presented in-house to staff. This work can be performed during clinic hours provided there are no other jobs outstanding.

  • Take personal responsibility to deal with difficult situations professionally and escalate appropriately.

  • Prioritise work load during each shift with the inclusion of pick up and drop tasks to meet targets.

Competency:  Working Hours / Bank Holiday’s

Key tasks:

  • Normal hospital working hours are Monday to Friday, 8am to 6:30pm.
  • Full-time position with hours varying week to week
  • Rota will include covering some weekday, night and weekend on calls.
