First ever ECVSMR resident

First ever Resident of the ECVSMR

Danae Charalambous, a former intern at Southern Counties Veterinary Specialists, recently became the first ever Resident of the European College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation (ECVSMR).
The ECVSMR is one of the latest additions to the European family of specialist colleges. The College includes two specialties, each with their own diploma: Small Animal and Equine Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation.

As stated on the ECVSMR website; “Veterinary sports medicine and rehabilitation is defined as a multidisciplinary speciality that encompasses the in depth physical and clinical examination, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of sport and work related injuries/disorders and rehabilitation of animals’ health through a holistic approach at the core of which is controlled exercise, functional training manual therapy techniques, therapeutic exercises and physical modalities”.

Danae graduated from the School of Veterinary Medicine of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 2014. She continued her postgraduate studies with a 6 month Internship in Veterinary Clinical Pathology and a two year Master of Science in Small Animal Internal Medicine. During that period of time she discovered the importance and the value of small animal physiotherapy and rehabilitation.

Danae moved to the UK in 2017 to join SCVS as a rotating intern. Her choice of practice was driven by her desire to work in a large multidisciplinary referral centre where she could have contact with a busy and very well equipped physiotherapy department. At the end of her internship, she continued on as a Physiotherapy Intern. In January 2019, SCVS became the first ever approved training centre for this diploma and Danae was accepted to become the first ever Resident of the European College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation.
